($2500) An ambitious city like Thurium could hardly be left behind in the new bronze coin fashion sweeping southern Italy. The magistrate Damon was charged with issuing a large bronze coin resembling the celebrated signed dinomos (SNG ANS 959), at first on a heavy standard of about 36-40 grams. It probably represented the bronze equivalent of an Attic drachm, but was too heavy for the half of an Italian silver nomos of about 8 gram and was almost immediately replaced with a much more successful coin of the standard types and weighing about 30 grams to which a whole range of attractive smaller denominations was appended.
