  Lucania, Metapontion. Late 3rd Century BC. Æ 18mm (4.59 gm). Head of Leukippos right,
  wearing Corinthian helmet with hippocamp on bowl / META, Demeter standing facing,
  holding cross-torch to left. Johnston, "The Bronze Coinage of Metapontum", in
  Kraay-Mørkholm Essays, pg. 131, 66; SNG ANS 561; SNG Copenhagen 1249. Good VF, dark
  brown patina, reverse roughness. Estimate $100.



  This specimen is sharply struck on a more than ample flan. Johnston states that some
  of these coins have "traces of what appears to be a hippocamp on the helmet bowl."
  This piece has a clearly struck hippocamp, good detail on the portrait of Leukippos,
  and is 3mm wider than the average specimen.
