LOKRIS, Lokris Opuntia. Circa 369-338 BC. AR Stater (12.19 gm). Wreathed 
      head of Persephone of Euainetos type right, wearing single-pendant earring 
      and a necklace; thin band in hair behind her ear / OPONTIWN, Ajax 
      advancing right, nude but for crested helmet, brandishing sword and 
      shield, shield decorated with griffin and a palmette, broken spear at his 
      feet diagonally. SNG Copenhagen 42 (same dies). Lightly toned, good VF, 
      perfectly centered, excellent style. ($5000)
      The fine and extensive coinage of the Opuntian Lokrians is surprising for 
      a city whose place in history is relatively unobtrusive. It has been 
      suggested that the Lokrians, returning from service as mercenaries in 
      Sicily, may have brought with them a quantity of Syracusan coins, which 
      would have provided bullion and the prototype for the 'Euainetan' head 
      adopted at Lokris.
