BID Estimate $200 JUDAEA, Hasmonean Kings. Yehohanan Hyrcanus I. 135-104 BCE. Æ Lepton (1.04 gm, 12h). Upright palm branch / Flowering lily between grain ears; no trace of A in field. Meshorer Group C; Hendin 458. VF, dark brown patina with earthen encrustation, some scratches. ($200) A number of types traditionally attributed to Hyrcanus II (63-40 BCE) have been re-attributed to his ancestor Yehohanan Hyrcanus, on the basis of the inscriptions which refer to him as "High Priest of the Jews", not King, a title established by Yehudah Aristobulus (104-103 BCE). These coins are thus the earliest coinage of an independent Jewish state. Copyright © CNG 2002 Developed by DataArt 2002 Lot 648 was unsold. Used by permission of CNG, www.cngcoins.com
