Dates on Provincial Coins of Gaza

Return to Gaza Coins page
The era of Gaza began in 61 BC. Several coins of Hadrian show a double dating system, e.g. Γ EΠI BςΡ.
This era dated from the time of Hadrian's visit to the city in AD 129-130 when games were held in his honour and he showed special favour to the city. The "Hadrianic" dating system began at about mid-year, so the dates overlap the normal Gaza years.
This "Hadrianic" dating system apparently ended when Hadrian died in AD 138.
