[Image] Description: We are very pleased to offer this exceptional and rare Jewish silver Zuz minted during the Bar Kochba revolt against Rome. The intense history associated with this coin as well as its famous inscription "Year two of the Freedom of Israel" have created one of the most sought after and actively collected artifacts of Jewish history. This dramatic example survives in excellent condition and is very well centered on both sides. This particular coin was minted during the second year of the revolt between 133-134 C.E. For more background on the Bar Kochba revolt see "History" below. The coin features both the palm branch and grapes which were among the most recognized Jewish designs of this period. The value of these coins have increased dramatically over the past few years due to very strong demand and extremely limited availability. In addition. these very scarce survivors of ancient Jewish history have become extremely popular as showpieces for modern jewelry. Here's your opportunity to add this exceptional 1800+ year old coin to your collection . We've placed a very reasonable reserve for a coin of this quality and significant historical importance. Don't let this one get away from you. Obverse: Three bunches of grapes hanging from a branch, a leaf to the left and tendril to the right. The name SIMON in Hebrew around Reverse: Palm branch: "Year two of the Freedom of Israel" in Hebrew around. Size: 18 mm ( 5/8" ) Weight: 3.41 grams Reference: Hendin 695, Mildenberg 191, 40 History: The earliest Jewish coins came into existence during the Maccabaen period. This was well after coinage had been established in the ancient world. This was due in large part to the invasion by the Babylonians in 586 BC which virtually destroyed the Judean kingdom just around the time that coinage was first becoming established. The Jews eventually returned to their former home, but the authority to coin money remained in the hands of the Persians. This situation existed until the time of the Maccabees (Hasmonean Dynasty) when John Hyrcannus, nephew of Judah Maccabee, became the first Jewish ruler to mint coins in his own name. This important numismatic event occurred after 135 B.C.E. The historic coin offered here was minted during the Bar Kochba revolt of 132 - 135 C.E. The causes of this second revolt against Roman tyranny had long been simmering in the Holy Land. The first revolt of the Jews some 70 years earlier, which culminated with Masada, had left serious unresolved tensions. These tensions again became cause for revolt when the Roman emperor Hadrian announced his plans to rebuild Jerusalem and rename it. Leading the revolt were Rabbi Akiba and his military commander Simon Bar Kochba who was seen by some as the Messiah. (Simon's name actually appears on the obverse of this coin) The war brought, once again, a brief period of freedom for the Jews, but ultimately it was the overwhelming military strength of Rome that ended the struggle. The beautiful coins minted by the Jews during this war are highly prized and sought after by collectors. * THE DANGERS OF LAST MINUTE BIDDING : Almost without fail after an auction has closed we receive emails from bidders who claim they were attempting to place a bid and were unable to get into eBay. If you're serious in your intent to become a winning bidder please avoid eBay's high traffic during the close of an auction. Its certainly your choice how you handle your bidding, but we'd rather see you a winner instead of being left out during the last minute scramble. * AUTHENTICITY : We are a member of the American Numismatic Association.
