Ionia, Ephesos(?). Circa 250-200 BC. AR Obol 8mm, 0.41 g. Draped bust of Artemis right, quiver at shoulder. Forepart of stag kneeling right, head left. Not in SNG Copenhagen; München; von Aulock; Kayhan -; Klein - cf CNG 75, lot 374 var. (forepart of stag left). VF, lightly toned, porous. Very Rare. Coins of this rare series are variously attributed. While the types recall the coinage of Ephesus, it is equally plausible that they were struck further south, perhaps in Caria or Lycia. Closing Date And Time: Jul 07, 2010 at 10:51:40 a.m. ET. Currently: $62 Used with permission of CNG coins, www.cngcoins.com, Jul, 2010 Note: I am putting this under Ephesos under the new CNG sale number, as Ephesos is the usual place for looking for coins with a stag. I could not find a coin like this (with no legends) under Caria or Lycia, (nor under Ephesos for that matter !) although does seem to be two faint letters on the left, suggesting a town of the Lycian league.
