Near EF, attractive dark brown patina. [Image] [Image] The bronze obol of Ptolemy I and II weighed c. 16 g. Partway through the reign of Ptolemy III a change was made. Obols were produced at c. 12g. This weight standard slowly declined during subsequent reigns. The very round bronzes with Aphrodite statue on the reverse have an obol of about 11 g. This issue is less round than that issue, though of similar weight. It is from about the time of Ptolemy V. The symbol before the eagle has been interpreted as a club. If so, it may be a symbol for Tyre. Or it may be a sylphium plant, a symbol of Kyrene.
