However, there is no special reason to assume that there was a mint there in the late reign of Alexander III. Cyprus produced an extensive coinage in the name of Alexander the Great. Ptolemy lost control of the island of Cyprus to Demetrios Poliorketes in 306 BC. A huge gap in tetradrachm style and weight exists between the Rhodian standard Alexander in elephant skin tetradrachm and the Ptolemaic standard Ptolemy I as Zeus tetradrachm. The difference in these two issues may be the loss and recovery of the island. On the basis of ongoing mint symbols, fuel availability, and the loss and recovery of Cyprus, this issue may be considered made on Cyprus.
