Description Dynasts of Thrace(?), Koson, c. 40 BC, AV stater, (8.57g) Eagle standing on scepter, holding wreath. / [KO_ON] Roman consul accompanied by two lictors, no BR monogram to left. RPC1701B, BMC Thrace2, BMC RR48. Good VF, some striking weakness, and a little light encrustion which should be easilly removed. The reverse is taken from the denarii of Brutus as Moneyer, struck c. 54 BC, Junia31, Syd906, C433/1). RPC suggests that the eagle is one of the Olbian types, but the KO_ON side is similar to that of the denarii of Q. Pomponius Rufus, struck c. 73 BC (Pomponia23, Syd.793, C398/1). If Olbia is not the place of mintage, then the monogram (not on this coin) is more likely that BR, which it appears to be. Is it possible that the earlier attribution of these enigmatic, common, gold coins is correct? Were these coins struck from the treasures consigned to Brutus by Polemocratia, the widow of the Thracian dynast Sadalas.? The two bronze denomination struck by the Thracian king Rhaescuporis I both take their types from denarii of Brutus: C502/3 & 505/5.) It has been noted in the NFA listings of these staters, that the Koson staters without monogram may have been struck on a slightly higher weight standard closer to the declining Attic standard gold stater, not the Roman Republican aureus standard. The strikings from this pair of dies are often soft, but not on this example. The reverse on the attributions quoted above is called the obverse, as on the Republican types copied on both sides, which feature the name of the moneyor on the reverse.
