Head of Athena left, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with palmettes / ???????, eagle with closed wings standing left, Mail Bid Home Page head reverted, looking at sea god reclining right, holding trident, placed sideways in right field, edges of square die visible. Rough surfaces, otherwise good very fine Ex Münzen und Medaillen 66, 22–23 October 1984, lot 140. The head of Athena on the obverse may commemorate an Athenian intervention in the first half of the fourth century which enabled the people of Itanus to expel their tyrant and establish a democracy. The eagle on the reverse symbolizes the local cult of Zeus Dictaeus. The small sea god recalls the original coin type of Itanus, which may represent the hero Itanus, Phoenician founder of the city, or Glaucus, son of Minos. Estimated Value: $ 6,750 ... Lot was unsold.
