Unattributed Greek, AR Tetartemorion (?) - Pegasus (or Hippocamp?) and standing figure $510.00 April 22, 2007 Beastcoins Collection. Greek, AR Tetartemorion (?) 8mm x 11mm, 0.37g Obv: Forepart of Pegasus right, Taurus symbol in right field, all in beaded circle Rev: Bearded figure in long garments standing right, left hand down at side, right hand raised, facing either a tall column surmounted by a small figure or a lit altar, Taurus symbol in upper middle field Possibly Asia Minor satrapal coinage (AR Hemiobol?) with Nergal or King of Persia reverse from Samaria, Cilicia, Mysia, Lycia or Lydia, but I have been unable to find anything similar. Maybe in Meshorer or Qedar, but I don't have access to either. The most similar coin I've seen so far, which is why I keep convincing myself this is from Cilicia-Tarsus is a AR Stater from NAC. The style and iconography seem very similar, but with no legends on my coin, I cannot be certain. Perhaps the Taurus symbols on both sides are actually Aramaic letters or symbols? Another possibility is that the animal is a hippocamp, not Pegasus, as the wings are spiny instead of feathery. Some replies on ancients.info about this coin: 1) Maybe the Taurus symbol is a reference to Baaltars, in which case this is likely to be a Cilcian coin. That being said, it's eye appeal and style suggest Samarian. 2) I had a look through M&Q Samarian Coinage but can find nothing like this. Actually, the style (or execution of it) isn't Samarian in MHO. I think it is Eastern, maybe Syrian though 'feels' Iranian/Persian too. Alex 3) I reckon Persis 2-1st C. BC.
