                                TARKONDIMOTOU FILANTWNIOU, Zeus seated left, 
                                holding Nike and sceptre. SNG Levante 1257; RPC 
                                I 3871. VF, dark green patina, rough on reverse.

                                Tarkondimotos backed Pompey in his war with 
                                Caesar in 48 BC, but nonetheless was permitted 
                                to keep his client kingdom. When conflict broke 
                                out between Antony and Octavian, he continued 
                                his opposition to the Caesarian party, hence the 
                                title "friend of Antony". Tarkondimotos died in 
                                a sea battle against Agrippa in 31 BC, and his 
                                sons immediately switched sides, thus preserving 
                                at least part of their realm from the vengeance 
                                of Octavian.
