                        CELTIC GAUL: The Bellovaci (?). 2nd century BC. AV 1/4 
                        stater (1.76 gm).

                        GAUL. The Bellovaci(?). Ca. second century BC. Gold 
                        quarter stater (1.76 gm). Celticized male or female head 
                        right, "ribbon" tattoo with zigzag ornament running from 
                        chin to cheekbone, two volutes beneath neck truncation / 
                        Winged horse standing left, with nose ending in 
                        proboscis and wing rendered as floating veil, star 
                        behind, branch below, volutes in exergue. Scheers, 
                        Monnaies Gauloises de Seine-Maritime, 390, pl. xix. BN 
                        p. 182, 7901-7903. La Tour pl. xxxii, 7901. Blanchet, 
                        Traité, p. 370, fig. 350. Extremely rare. Unusually 
                        broad-flanned, preserving details of the design not 
                        noted in the literature. Good very fine 

                        Attribution to the Bellovaci was proposed by Muret and 
                        Chabouillet in the BN catalogue (1889). It was 
                        questioned on stylistic grounds by Blanchet. Scheers has 
                        pointed out that the lack of provenances leaves us 
                        without solid evidence for the issuing tribe, but she 
                        cites the rich alloy as evidence for a second-century 
                        date.
