Winged male diety with winged feet running left; Carian letter / Quadripartite incuse square with Carian letter in one corner. Troxell, "Winged Carians" in Essays Thompson, 35 (mint B, period I) = SNG von Aulock 2343. Fine, light porosity. Very rare! 720823 We may never know the precise location of where the "winged Carians" were minted, Troxell suggests four candidates: Kaunos, Kalynda, Krya and Telandria. Perhaps the Carian letter that appears on both the obverse and reverse of this coin is the mint city's ethnic, but even if this could be proven, identifying the mint would still prove problematic because, as of yet, ancient Carian remains undeciphered and only a few Carian place names are known. The evidence for 'Mint B, Period I' is meager: until now, there were only known five staters from four obverse dies, all of which are significantly different (with this specimen, we can now amend these figures to read six staters from five obverse dies, this being struck from a different obverse die than the other known example). The only other example of this type was found in 1960 (IGCH 1981), purchased by Hans von Aulock, and subsequently acquired by the American Numismatic Society. This coin is the better centered of the two. It is likely that other examples have been found since the 1960s.
