Winkler, “Consideratii despre moneda ‘Koson’,” Études et Recherches d’Histoire Ancienne 23/2 (1972), pp. 175f., 1 and 3–5, fig. 1. Good extremely fine Ex F. Martin Post Collection. Gold staters of Coson have been represented in several hoards, all localized in western Romania, in the immediate neighborhood of ancient Sarmizegetusa. These findspots do not support the reading of the monogram as a mintmark of Olbia, as proposed by Head and Bahrfeldt and tentatively endorsed in RPC. Winkler’s study of the technical features shows not only that the emission was the product of a local mint, but also that the side with the inscription, traditionally described as the obverse, is in fact the reverse. The design of the reverse is manifestly inspired by the denarius issue of Brutus in 54 BC. The obverse type, an eagle with a wreath in its claw, may symbolize the anti-monarchical struggle of the tyrannicides, or perhaps the royal status of Coson himself. Apparently this coinage was struck during the period when Brutus was raising troops in northern Greece in preparation for the final confrontation with Antony and Octavian, not by Brutus himself but by an allied Dacian king from the lower Danube region.
