Silver Nomos - 8.04 grams Obverse: Nude Apollo Catharsius (with erection) walking right, holding branch in right hand, small running daimon above left arm, stag in right field right with head turned back, Greek legend in left field retrograde KAV. Reverse: Stag standing right, collar? around neck. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Condition: EF/Choice EF, Coin is much, much better than picture. This coin has excellent surfaces, especially the reverse with excellent light silver metal. The artistic rendition of the stag on the reverse is superb for an archaic coin and exceptional for this issue. The obverse is struck from a worn die. There is virtually no wear on this coin. What stands out about this coin is the significant erection of Apollo! I have posted an enlargement of the penis below. It is worth a look. See the enlarged penis below. Interestingly, the chest looks like breasts, but we won't even get into the redefinition of Apollo as a hermaphrodite. Now back to description: This is a beautiful coin. The reverse is nearly perfect. The erect penis of Apollo on the obverse is uncommon. The details on the obverse are more apparent in hand than the picture indicates. Centering is good for the issue with all the main design elements being present. This is a choice coin for the issue. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Valuation: Why Valuation? A toned good VF with Apollo's head off the flan was estimated at $400 in CNG 38, lot 92. While having a newer obverse die, Apollo's head is off the flan. The stag is crude. In CNG 58, lot 81, a VF with many small surface marks was estimated at $500. A later issue of this coin, the design is cruder than the coin at auction. In Triton I, lot 157, a toned VF with an irregular flan, very rare, was estimated at $500. It is a bit different style than the coin at auction with decent style but a problem flan. For a similar coin, with the same obverse and reverse dies (erect penis and collar? around stag's neck), see the current Harlan J. Berk, 127th Buy or Bid Sale closing June 25, 2002, lot 104. In my opinion, lot 104 is not in as good condition as the coin at auction and is offered at a buy price of $450. Harlan J. Berk 127, lot 104 portrays Apollo with an erect penis. The three other examples do not. The portrayal of the penis as erect seems to be at the discretion of the die engraver and not a specific variety of this coin. Upon examination of 20 examples of this coin in CNG auction catalogs, only one other had an erect penis. A few seemed to show Apollo's penis in a flaccid state. Generally, a feature like this greatly increases the value of a coin. Even on coins that are designed to portray an erect penis like the Thasos satyr ravishing a protesting nymph, bigger is better. On a coin like the one on auction, not only is an erect penis uncommon, a well defined one is certainly worth a premium. Comparing the coin at auction to all of these coins, the features that distinguish it from the others is the erect penis and an exceptional stag, which should command a premium over the other examples.
