BRUTTIUM, Kaulonia. Circa 525-500 BC. AR Nomos (7.93 gm). KAVL, nude Apollo walking right, holding laurel branch in upright right hand and small running daimon holding long branch on outstretched left arm; to right, stag standing right with head reverted / Apollo and stag as on obverse but incuse to left, no ethnic; daimon and stag's antlers outlined. Apollo is perhaps to be seen as kouros daphnephoros purifying his newly won sanctuary at Delphi with laurel branches culled from the Vale of Tempe; the small figure, also carrying a branch, can be interpreted as the god's messenger sent to announce his arrival. This type thus fits with other south Italian nomoi such as the tripod-lebes at Kroton (the following lot) which refer to the role of the Delphic oracle in the foundation of these colonies. Triton V Sale, 16 Jan 2002, lot 1126. Lot was unsold.
