BMC 28; RecGen 23 (same dies); History: According to mythology, the city of Cius was founded during the expedition of the Argonauts. It was totally destroyed by Philippe V of Macedonia in 202 BC. The land was then offered to Prusias I who gave the town its name and added "ad Mare" to distinguish it from Prusias ad Hypium. Henceforth it belonged to the kingdom of Bithynia. In 72 BC during the third war against Mithridate VI of Pontus, the city opened its gates to the Roman generals and was declared a free town (civita libera). The city resumed its original name under Claudius. With kind permission of www.cgb.fr, Sept. 2010
