Attica, Athens Athena/Owl Type AE 12 $31.00 Apr-10-00 Coin was minted for Attica, Athens circa 350-262 BC. Athens was the mistress of the Aegean world through most of the 5th Century BC, becoming a great cultural and political center. The long drawn out Peloponnesian War drained Athens of most of her wealth, and ended with the capture of the city by Sparta. Although prosperous again in the 4th Century BC, Athens never regained her importance in international affairs. The obverse of this type depicts the head of Athena facing right, wearing Corinthian helmet. The reverse features an owl standing left, with legend A Theta E. Coin shows granular surfaces, but otherwise grades F, with clear devices and legend. A very decent example of the type, Lindgren 1537.
