4423 [Homebutton][Shopping Header] [Image] Item Sold At Auction #21 ----------------------------------- Lot Number: 61442 Estimate: $300.00 Final Sale Price: $1,155.00 ----------------------------------- Denomination: 22mm Grade: VF dark green and earthen patina Reference: AC 244; Saryan, NumCirc May 1991, pg.112 Armenia. 1st Century AD. Æ 22mm (9.43 gm). Armenian tiara flanked by D and star / Horse standing right. AC 244; Saryan, NumCirc May 1991, pg.112. Nice VF, dark green and earthen patina. Estimate $300. One of the nicest examples of this coin seen. Other than the clear Armenian references in the devices, there is no clue to the origin of these enigmatic pieces. The meaningless legends and the mixture of Greek and Latin letters (on the last of the listed pieces the R in place of P is absolutely clear) suggests a date sometime in the 1st century AD or even later, with perhaps some relationship to the tessera of Ephesos with similar nonsensical legends.
