                                Description
An extremely attractive and rare issue of Aretas III, king of the Nabataean
Arabs (87-62 BC) struck at the city of Damascus. 8.24 g., 20 mm Obv.
Diademed portrait of Aretas III r./ Rev. Tyche of Damascus seated l. on
rocks with river god swimming below. BASILEWS ARETOY FILELLHNOS. "Unlike
the Tyche of Antioch, she holds a cornucopiae in her l. arm and stretches
the r. straight out before her, as if blessing with her beneficent powers
and happy and industrious populations of her fertile oasis...." (E.T.
Newell, LSM p. 94). Refs. SNG Cop. 126 BMC Arabia, p. 1 no. 3. A very rare
issue of the Arab king who fought against the last Seleucid rulers of
