Pegasos flying left; A below / Helmeted head of Athena right; DI and shield behind, AP below. Pegasi II pg. 531, 26. Good Fine, reverse double struck. 726919 According to tradition this city was founded after the Trojan War by the diviner Amphilochus, brother of Alcmaeon, on the south-eastern shores of the Ambracian Gulf. In its 5th century rivalry with the Corinthian colony of Ambracia in Epeiros it received strong support from Athens, though the Argives always managed to maintain their independent status. From the mid-4th century, in common with many other mints in the area, Argos began large-scale production of Corinthian-type 'pegasos' staters, many of which found their way to Sicily where they are principally found today.
