Gemini III, January 9th, 2007 Lot # 154Estimate: US$3000 AEGINA. Silver stater AEGINA. Silver stater (12.09 gm). Attica, Aegina, Ca. 525/20–500 BC. Sea turtle of “proto-tortoise” type, with segmented carapace / “Union Jack” incuse, four quarters filled or partially filled. Arnold-Biuchhi, Beer-Tobey and Waggoner, ANSMN 33, p. 17, 123–124, pl. 10. Holloway, ANSMN 17, pl. viii, 5–6. SNG Lockett 2635 = Pozzi 1632. Very rare. About extremely fine. Robinson, “Pseudoaeginetica,” NC 1928, attributed the so-called proto-tortoises to Cydonia in Crete. They are now recognized as Aeginetan, a rare variant type that was used alongside the normal T-back sea turtle. Because the proto-tortoise dies are always very fresh, whereas the T-back turtle dies were typically used to excess, there is cause to suspect that the proto-tortoise type had some special significance. © 2006 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
