Elaea, Aeolis. AE17. semi-autonomous issue, AD 161-192. Magistrate P. Salonius. ELAIETWN, youthful male head right. EPI dot P dot CALWNIOY, basket containing two corn-ears and a poppy. BMC 1320650; BMC 38 var (magistrate); SNG Cop 191 var (ditto); Isegrim -; Mionnet -. Unpublished magistrate. With permission of cngcoins.com. Sept. 2009 Ex D. Alighieri Collection. Estimate: $100. Note: This coin, when sold, was described as being one of the magistrate Pellonius. The coins with that name show PELLONIOY. However, this reverse legend has a) a punctuation mark after the P, b) the letter C (=S) which is clearly different from the E of EPI and c) a clear AL, not LL at the bottom. This gives the name of a P. Salonius and not Pellonius. The British Museum has an example of this coin with the same characteristics as this one: http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details/collection_image_gallery.aspx?assetId=1430033001&objectId=1320650&partId=1
