Celtic, Arverni, AV Stater, Vercingetorix, 54-52 BC. 18mm, 7.29 g. Obv: VERCI-NGETORIXS, bare head of Vercingetorix left with wavy hair. Rev: Horse leaping left, amphora below. There are less than thirty known staters that bear his name. The free horse on the reverse symbolises the Arverni spirit of independence. Only a handful of these coins are in private hands. One was sold in 2003 for 400,000 French Francs (about $70,000 at the time).
