Danubian Celtic Bronze Coin

Danubian Celts, circa 1st Century BC

     Æ17mm, 7.0 grams
     Obverse:  Head of Herakles left wearing lions skin.
     Reverse:  The club of Herakles  above a bow in case, star above,
     blundered inscription between.

     Background:  The Danubian Celts did not mint coins of their own
     designs but instead chose to copy those coin types that circulated in
     the region.  In this case, they chose to copy a type issued by
     Alexander The Great of Macedonia.  Most of these coins bear the
     distinctive Celtic style but most often are easily differentiated by
     the meaningless blundered inscriptions (the Celts were illiterate).
