The half-brother of Michael Angelus of Epirus, Theodore conquered the Latin Kingdom of Thessalonica in 1224 and established the Empire of Thessalonica as a rival to the Empire of Nicaea. In an attempt to conquer Constantinople, he was captured and blinded.
