The reign of the military commander, Nicephorus, who married his predecessor's widow, Theophano, saw the recapture of Cyprus and the annexation of parts of Syria, including Antioch which had been lost 300 years before. Raised taxes made him unpopular and he was murdered by his wife's lover in 969 AD.
