England, Charles I, Tower mint under Parliament, 1542-1548 (reigned
1625-1649), AR Halfgroat (15x16mm), F. Spink/Seaby 2850, mintmark sun, .
Obv. CAROLVS.D:G:M:R:F:ET:H:REX., crowned bust left, II behind, in inner
circle. Rev. .IVSTITIA.THRONVM.FIRMAT., Oval shield in inner circle. The
coin is darkly toned, with some lighter areas. Legends are about 1/2
present, with some letters partially off the flan and some weak. The
reverse image is fairly clear, but with some weak spots, and the portrait
shows the outline but little detail. Charles I attempted to be an absolute
monarch and rule without Parliament. However, civil war broke out, the
forces of the King lost, and Charles was beheaded.
