Concerning Our Switch To "Private Auction" : Our decision to list all of our eBay coin offerings as "Private Auctions" is being done at the request of many of our important coin collectors. Please take the time to read why we have taken this step. Over the past year a significant number of our dedicated customers have urged us to consider private auctions so that they may avoid receiving the enormous amounts of spam from individuals and companies who make a habit of harvesting the email addresses of eBay users. For many, this is particularly disturbing and embarrassing when spam for adults only services and products continue to flood their inbox. In addition, some of our clients have informed us that they have become the target of hate groups due to their purchases of certain ethnic coins. This is especially true with coins of Jewish origin. And even though eBay has made tremendous efforts to curb attempts to gain access to user information, it continues to be a serious problem. We have decided, therefore, to take the only step possible to protect our client confidentiality by switching to private auctions. Private auctions have always been the normal procedure for all auction houses such as Christie's, Sotheby's, and major coin sales as well. We fully realize that many eBay users are reluctant to bid on private auctions, but the privacy of our clients is certainly more important than any other consideration. Description: We are very pleased to offer this genuine 700+ year old silver Penny of King Edward I ( Longshanks ) of England from 1272-1307. This coin was minted in London between 1282-1289 and survives in excellent condition with much of the art and legends fully visible. This example is well centered and still maintains a beautiful luster on both sides which adds considerably to its desirability and value. You will not be disappointed with this serious treasure of English history. King Edward I of England (June 17, 1239 - July 7, 1307), popularly known as "Longshanks" due to his great height and stature and "Hammer" of the Scots" as well as Law Giver is best known as the king who conquered Wales and kept Scotland under English domination. Edward was born at the Palace of Westminster on June 17 or 18, 1239 and ascended the throne of England on November 21, 1272 after the death of his father, King Henry III. He married twice, first to Eleanor of Castile which produced sixteen children. Her death in 1290 left Edward heartbroken. He displayed his grief by erecting the Eleanor crosses, one at each place where her funeral procession stopped for the night. His second marriage to Marguerite, the daughter of King Philippe III of France, produced a further three children. Edward's political designs on Wales were displayed with considerable military prowess when he defeated Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. He relentlessly pursued the surviving members of the de Montfort family. In 1275, pirates in Edward's pay intercepted a ship carrying the exiled Eleanor de Montfort, Simon's only daughter, to Wales where she was to marry Llywelyn the Last, then ruler of the principality. The marriage had been arranged when there was still some political advantage to be obtained from an alliance with Simon de Montfort. Llywelyn, however, still saw the marriage as a way to antagonize his long-standing enemy, Edward. But Edward had now seized Eleanor and imprisoned her at Windsor where she remained until Llywelyn conceded terms for peace in 1278. Unexpectedly, Llywelyn's younger brother, Dafydd (who had briefly been an ally of the English) ignited another rebellion in 1282. Edward promptly destroyed this fresh resistance, capturing and executing Dafydd in the following year. To consolidate his conquest, he built a network of stone castles throughout the principality of which the best known is Caernarfon. Wales was incorporated into England under the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284. Edward then turned his attentions to Scotland and on May 10, 1291 Scottish nobles recognized the authority of Edward I. He had planned to marry his son to the child queen, Margaret I of Scotland but she died before the marriage became a reality. Subsequently Edward was invited by the Scottish nobles to select her successor from the various claimants to the throne. He chose John Balliol over Robert Bruce, father of Robert I of Scotland. Opposition erupted and Edward mercilessly executed the focus of discontent, William Wallace, in 1305, having earlier defeated him at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. His ultimate plan to unite the two countries never came to fruition. Edward died in 1307 at Burgh-on-Sands, Northumberland while on his way to wage another campaign against the Scots, who had now been energized by Wallace's martyrdom under the leadership of Robert the Bruce. He was buried at Westminster Abbey and was succeeded by his son, King Edward II of England. .
