AR Penny, ND (London, struck c. 1095-1100). North-856; S-1262. 1.37 grams. William II (Rufus), 1087-1100 AD. Cross Fleury and Piles type. Central circle; a crowned, draped and mustachioed bust within, facing and holding scepter in right hand, bust extending to edge of flan, star at right; "WILL" ("EL" blundered" "RE". Reverse: Central circle, within cross fleury, and in each angle a pile with pellet at apex: +ESTMNER ON LIII (London mint?). Estmaer is listed as a London coiner, but the "LIII" suggests Lincoln. Very good strike for type on a flan without the usual cracks or chips. Handsome, old deep gray toning showing blue; a warmer gray on the reverse, with coppers and russets in some of the recesses. Especially choice for issue. NGC graded EF-40. This is the rarest issue of William Rufus (usually seen wretched), and even with the areas of striking flatness it ranks among the finest known of its type. Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000. Ex Allen and F.A. Walters collections. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).
