Aulus Vitellius was close to the Imperial Family from the time of Tiberius and served in a number of high goverment positions until being appointed commander of the legions in Lower Germany by Galba in 68 AD. After Otho overthrew Galba, Vitellius was proclaimed emperor by his troops, and he defeated the forces of Otho in January, 69 AD. He proved to be a self-absorbed and gluttonous ruler, and he was soon dispatched in turn, his body dragged though the streets of Rome and tossed in the Tiber River.
