Flavius Theodosius was successful general under Gratian, and successor to Valens. He defeated Magnus Maximus and Eugenius, re-uniting the western and eastern parts of the empire under his unified command. During his long reign, 379-395 AD, he is known for his vigorous persecution of the pagans and shutting down the old religions' temples all over the empire. He died of natural causes, again breaking the empire into eastern and western parts under his sons Honorius and Arcadius.
