M Cocceius Nerva was an old lawyer politician when he was elected to the throne after the assassination of Domitian in 96 AD. He had only a tenuous hold on the army, demonstrated when they successfully demanded Domitian's killers be handed over, but he adopted Trajan as his successor, which successfully consolidated his power until his death in 98 AD.
