Maxentius was the son of Maximian, who was one of the first Augusti in the Tetrarchic government with Diocletian and retired the same time as Diocletian. Maxentius gathered an army and was declared Caesar in 306 AD; ultimately he got his father to come out of retirement to help him with a military bid for greater power, but Constantine's victory at the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD ended it for him.
