Marcus Aurelius is acclaimed as one of the finest emperors in history. He was well educated and served very well politically and militarily, having been groomed as Caesar for many years (139-161 AD) by his adoptive father Antoninus Pius. He was Augustus from 161 to 180 AD, and his writings are widely read today.
