Macrinus was Preatorian Prefect under Caracalla. When Caracalla was told by a fortune teller that Macrinus would become emperor, Macrinus was forced to strike, and, making the prophecy self-fulfulling, Caracalla was killed and Macrinus assumed the throne in 217 AD. It wasn't long before the Severan Dynasty struck back, and he was defeated and killed by the forces of Julia Mamaea and Elagabalus in 218 AD.
