RIC 604a.1 of Hadrian
Hadrian Æ Dupondius. IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG P M TR P COS III, radiate bust right, drapery on far shoulder / SALVS PVBLICA S-C, Salus standing left with foot on globe, patera & rudder, foot on globe. Cohen 1358.
Lot No.8003. Fine/VG and utterly de-patinated.
$ 20.
This type is quite unusual in its depiction of Salus carrying an upright rudder. The only other type like it was minted under Galba, so it has been suggested that this type is commemorative of Galba's reign exactly 50 years before.
Hadrian (119-138 AD) had a great respect for Greek culture, which was looked at with disdain by the Roman aristocracy in his own time, but his thoughtful consolidation of the empire and support of the arts make him one of the most admired of Roman emperors today.
