Look

Geta AE16 of Nicaea, Bithynia. KAICAP GETAC, draped bust right / NICAEWN, Pan standing right with trophy over his shoulder.

Lot No.3172. VF and possibly unpublished.

$ 375.

Pan was a Satyr, the son of Hermes and a nymph. He is associated with Victory (hece the trophy) because of his ability to turn one's enemies and send them fleeing in mad terror. (This is the source of the word PANIC!)

Geta was the younger son of Septimius Severus and was Caesar from 198 until 209 AD, then co-augustus with his father and brother Caracalla until Septimius' death in 211 AD. Caracalla was ultimately unwilling to share power, and had Geta and thousands of his followers murdered in 212.
