L Domitius Aurelianus (ruled 270-275 A.D.) was born in Sirmium around 207AD. A soldier who was commander of Claudius II's cavalry, after Claudius' death by plague, was proclaimed emperor and led a revolt against Quintillus. A general civil war was averted when Quintillus committed suicide. Aurelian was confirmed as emperor by the Senate, and spent his reign nearly restoring the Empire to its former extent, defeating the Tetrici in the west and Zenobia in the east, and constructing the massive fortifications around Rome, still standing and known today as Aurelian's Wall. He was ultimately done in by his own Praetorian Guard, who were apparently egged on by Aurelian's personal secretary who concocted a story about Aurelian's plans to execute key members of the Guard.
