John Hyrcanus I, Yehonitan in Hebrew, was the son of Simon the Maccabee, who Antiochos VII had tried to get on his side in his war with Tryphon by granting some autonomy to Israel, which had been part of the Seleucid Empire. Simon was murdered before he could mint any coins, but John was a very successful ruler, expanded the new Jewish Kingdom greatly, and minted what are the first Jewish coins.
