At the end of the Peloponnesian War, Athens found itself cut off from their silver mines and their treasury exhausted, so they resorted to issuing this emergency issue of silver-plated bronze coins.
It is an important relic of the both the final days of the Peloponnesian Wars, as well as an early example of the economic principles of Ludwig von Mises in regards to fiat money!
